Deel III in de Red Sox Chronicles
Het “Anthem” van de Boston Red Sox is het nummer Tessie.
Tessie is ‘geschreven’ in 2004 door de Dropkick Murphys. Het wordt in Fenway Park gespeeld bij de wedstrijden van de thuisploeg. Toeval of niet, dat jaar (2004) wonnen de Red Sox eindelijk weer eens de titel na 86 jaar. Het originele nummer "Tessie" komt uit 1902 uit de musical The Silver Slipper. De naam Tessie is afgeleid van een verschillende namen als Esther, Tess en Theresa.

Naast Tessie wordt ook het nummer Sweet Caroline van Neil Diamond gespeeld in stadion. Vooral in het midden van de 7e inning.
Het nummer Tessie heeft een aantal namen en termen die belangrijk zijn voor het honkbal in Boston. Ze komen er onder andere de Royal Rooters, Third Base, Huntington en McGreevey in voor. Voor een Red Sox fan in wording, leek het me hoog tijd eens uit te zoeken over het-hoe-en-wat over Tessie.
Royal Rooters
De Royal Rooters was de fan-club van de Boston Red Sox tijdens de vroege 20ste eeuw. Ze werd geleid door Michael T. McGreevey die is Boston een kroeg had die de "3rd Base" heette. Ze hielpen de Boston Americans in 1903 aan de eerste World Series.
"Nuf Ced" McGreevey
Michael T. "Nuf Ced" McGreevey was de leider van de fanclub van de Boston Americans (nu dus de Boston Red Sox). Deze fanclub werd beter bekend als de "Royal Rooters". Zijn bijnaam "Nuf Ced" kreeg hij omdat hij dat altijd schreeuwde als er een ruzie in zijn kroeg was over de Boston Americans en de Boston Braves.
Third Base
McGreevey was eigenaar van de Third Base Saloon, die zijn naam dankte aan het feit dat het derde honk de laatste stop voor thuis was. Zijn saloon was Boston's eerste sportcafé, geheel opgetrokken in het honkbalthema, met foto’s van de spelers en een scorebord aan de muur.
In 2008, de bassist van de Dropkick Murphys, Ken Casey heropende de Third Base, hoewel de kroeg al niet meer zo heette. Nu heet de tent McGreevey's. In de bar in Boylston Street hangt een bord waarop staat dat je "1200 Steps to Fenway Park." bent.

Stahl, Dinneen and Young
Drie legendarische Boston spelers. De World Series van 1903 gingen tussen de Boston Americans en Pittsburgh Pirates in een best-of-nine serie. Boston wond met 5-3.
Pittsburgh pitcher Sam Leever raakte na wedstrijd drie en dus moest zijn teamgenoot Deacon Phillippe vijf wedstrijden op rij aangooien voor de Pirates. Phillippe won er drie van de 5 maar dat was dus niet genoeg. Het succes bij Boston was vooral te danken aan de pitchers Bill Dinneen and Cy Young (tevens de eerste pitcher tijdens de MLB met een Perfect Game op 5 mei 1904) en verrevelder Chick Stahl.
Huntington Avenue is de een na grootste doorgaande straat van Boston. Hij begint op Copley Square en gaat door tot Back Bay, Fenway, Longwood en eindigd bij Mission Hill. Huntington Avenue is ook bekend als Massachusetts Route 9. Het stadion van de Red Sox ligt overigens niet aan deze weg.
Boston's tenth man
In het honkbal zijn er 9 startende spelers, het publiek is de "10th man". Hetzelfde als het Legioen, de 12e man bij Feyenoord.
